Depending on a person’s customs and beliefs, a placenta may hold significant symbolic and spiritual meaning. It’s common practice for many hospitals and healthcare facilities is to dispose of the placenta as medical waste, however, many parents, doulas, nurses, and midwives honor the placenta and acknowledge its worth.

Studies show that the placenta plays a tremendous role in certain ancient traditions, rituals, and holistic and alternative medicine. Icelanders call the placenta, “fylgia,” which literally means “guardian angel.” In Hmong culture, the word for placenta means “jacket.” The placenta is believed to be a spiritual jacket worn by the baby as they enter the world. Whatever your beliefs, if you have felt called to keep your placenta with you post birth, it is important to cherish and nourish that inkling of knowing that came from within!

Few things to know about Placenta Prints:
The placenta is best printed immediately after birth however, placentas can be defrosted and used for art making purposes up to three months postpartum. There are multiple ways to print a placenta including using the blood of the placenta as the printing method, in addition to using dyes and paints to coat the washed placenta and print on the paper. We work with your placenta to decide the best artistic outcome of your unique placenta print and you will receive one main print, as well as any practice and test placenta prints that have taken place during the artistic process.

The final placenta print will feature the print in the middle of the page, and we will intuitively channel a design using but not limited to watercolor, gauche and flower prints along the boarders and negative space to honor special time your baby spent being nourished by this powerful organ in your womb.

We will work with the family to discuss what they would like to do with the placenta after it has been used to make artwork. It is important to intentionally bless and release this powerful organ and thank it for all that it did to create a healthy baby and spirit. This can be a special place for the child to visit as they grow. Tessa will reiki the placenta and space before releasing it back into the earth if that is what you plan to do with it. She is happy to honor your decision on where to release weather that be in your backyard, a favorite hiking grounds, or near the water.
